Christopher Rivard(author) attended college at UMass Lowell with an associates degree in design. I quickly decided that I needed to get into a more "hands on" occupation. I had worked as a carpenter all through college and had a friend that could teach me hardwood flooring. Driven by what I saw in Hardwood Flooring Magazine, i took up the offer to learn hardwood from my good friend Mark at Marks Hardwood Floors of North Andover, Ma. I am happy to finally be at a point where I can combine my design experience and love for colors with hardwood floors.
Why do we need healthier floor finishes?
I have always had skin problems but once I turned 25 a quick trip to the dermatologist revealed that I had Plaque Psoriasis. He prescribed Humira. It helps but I started to notice the impact my job had on my skin. After staining or using OMU finish I started to ache. My joints and muscles would seize or swell up! This led me to think about what impact these finishes were having on our customers as well. Not all of us have vacation houses to move to during the finishing process!
I started to research alternative finishes. I noticed that I wasnt the only one having difficulty with these poisonous finishes. The owner of Earthpaints created his line of finishes due to the fact that what he was using as a painter was hurting his health as well.
What I found was surprising. These new low voc finishes are not only better for everyone, but they are strong! Vermeister boasts some of the most scratch and scuff resistant finishes available in any voc category. Rubio and Pallmann have finishes that are spot repairable, meaning, you can resand areas and re-coat without ever being able to see fixed area!
I knew there had to be 'Options". I knew that leaving a job and having a "buzz" with red eyes could not be good. As much as I cover my body for protection the voc's would always find a way to get to me. My Skin!
I am glad to say that now with our new options, this doesnt have to be. We are proud that now we can be healthy and responsible and still give our customers the best quality job.
